For nonemergency projects -- a remodel or remedial work on your plumbing -- you need a pro who understands residential-system design and knows the code in your area. He also has to be able to work in a finished environment. That means putting down a piece of scrap carpeting to protect floors and cutting precise, easy-to-repair holes in walls, and, then, only when necessary.

After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own. Plumbers with several years of plumbing experience may earn master status by passing an exam. Some states require a business to employ a master plumber in order to obtain a plumbing contractor’s license.
There’s often an Allen wrench that comes with the garbage disposal. I keep it under the sink. When the thing jams, follow the directions in the manual, and I won’t need to come out. Another plumbing tip, don’t believe the myth about putting lemon peels in the disposal to make it smell better. That will just make it jam faster.  These are the things you should never pour down the drain.

Licensing: There is no standard when it comes to licensing for plumbers. Each state has their own rules and regulations. Most states do require 2-5 years of plumbing experience before the plumbing licensing exam can be taken. Practice tests are available online and can increase the chances of passing the somewhat difficult licensing exam. The plumbers licensing exam will test the knowledge of local codes and best practices.

Even though the employment growth is excellent, employers are still reporting difficulty in finding skilled plumbers to fill the growing void being created by those who are retiring. New building construction, along with stricter regulations on industry standards for economic efficiency plumbing are both reasons for the spike in job openings. My plan was to have an old kitchen faucet head replaced with a new one I had bought, a 5 minute job at most. The plumber told me it would first be a $28 assessment fee and then a "job " cost but they could not quote phone costs or give me any indication of a range cost. I declined to use them and to find a handyman instead. Plumbers stories significantly overcharging  seem prevalent and I could see it could well happen to me. I got a handyman who did the job in 3 minutes flat! The Plumbing Costs Chart you sent out is good, it shows it would probably have cost me $200 for 5 minutes plus $28 assessment fee.
Be prepared for a more urgent situation by establishing a relationship with a plumber before you actually need him. If possible, hire him to do nonemergency repairs or fixture installations during normal hours. It's easier to get a plumber's attention if you're a regular customer and not a panicked stranger calling at 8 p.m. on a Saturday night asking him to fix a gushing waste pipe in your basement.
